Surreal Gallery 2009
New works in progress by Montana artist Michael Meissner.
Surrealism is a 20th century art form that has always inspired me. From
the works of Rene Magritte to Max Ernst; from the outrageous images
of Salvador Dali to the more subtle yet clever works of Montana artist
Walter Hook, surrealism is the "stuff of dreams". Have you ever
awaken from a dream that was so vivid that you had to pause to
question whether it was reality, or were you waking into the dream ?
These images all carry with them a story. Some are whimsical,
some have deeper meaning. While only one interpretation is mine...
there are many stories to tell. The viewer is invited to seek their own.

"American Classic"
Original acrylic painting on stretched canvas, 24" x 36". Part of the 2009 "Heritage Series",
featuring old fashioned family images melded with
elements of the world of today. This concept presents time as a non-linear process, one in which
you might be able to sidestep into another time, past or future. The subjects in this painting
are those of the artist's great-great grandparents, Adam and Sarah Rasley, immigrants to Montana
from Pennsylvania by way of Nebraska. Adam served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

"Transmigration"
Handpainted original oil on stretched canvas, 16" x 20". This work is another surreal image that reflects the
philosophy of "transmigration", also known as "metempsychosis". In English ? ...the more recognized concept of "reincarnation", a
commonly held belief in many eastern religious traditions. The Buddhists explain that the life force is like the
flame of a candle, at the instant it flickers and extinguishes it lights anew in another form reborn into the world. Only through
many lifetimes of knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment can you escape this cycle of rebirth to reach a state of bliss known to all
as "Nirvana".
