Surreal Gallery 2008
Current works in progress by Montana artist Michael Meissner.
"Surrealism is a 20th century art form that has always intrigued me. From the works of Rene Magritte to Max Ernst; from the outrageous images of Salvador Dali to the more subtle yet clever works of Montana artist Walter Hook, surrealism to me has always been the "stuff of dreams". These are the things we see when we close our eyes and drift off to other places.
Surrealism is what I started painting in my youth, and I turned away from it for many years to pursue other avenues that I thought would be more "marketable" or publicly appealing..... but these other forms were not my passion. We all have our dreams, and it is my belief that we are obligated to confront them. Failing to create these things of dreams is hardly different than denying your own soul.
These striking and sometimes disturbing images carry with them a story. One interpretation is my own, but the viewer is invited to seek their own meaning."
