Preparation of the Bison Model
This involved sanding, solvent cleaning and priming retouch of the buffalo model, as
well as constructing a mobile base to enable moving/ rotating the model while
in work.
|
|
|
Sketching on the Model
These steps included the layout and sketching of the design concept onto the
bison model. Scaling and balance were taken into account to accurately draw
the design on the surface of the model in preparation for painting. Hard pencils
were used to minimize smudging.

|
Airbrushing the Skyline
An airbrush was used initially to develop the skyline and outbound color scheme
on the model. To avoid overspray on the sketched areas masking was required. The top
and legs of the model were painted a deep maroon color, fading down into a sunrise
scene on the left side and a daylight skyline on the right side.

|
|
Handpainting (Model Left Side) Elements include a Plains Indian tipi village, the Oglala Sioux warrior
and medicine man "Short Bull", a buffalo lance and warshield, and the revered hunter, the Bald Eagle.
Each element was then handpainted using brushes of various sizes and styles. Using acrylics on a non-porous
surface requires a different technique than you would find working on canvas, and the work time is
shortened while trying to blend different areas. In some cases a dry brushing technique was used with some
good effects.

|
Handpainting (Model Right Side)
The right side of the model contains elements that represent some of the history, wildlife and geography
of Yellowstone Park. Key elements include the prominent sportsman and conservationist US President
Teddy Roosevelt, the American flag, a recognized and endangered symbol of Montana, the
grizzly bear, a bighorn sheep ram, and Doane and Stevenson peaks.

Forehead Model Detail
The forehead of the bison model features a
"Wheel of Life" symbol, a familiar Plains Indian
symbol that represented the four seasons, the
elements earth, air, fire and water, and the
four cardinal directions north, east, south
and west. Detail also includes leather wrap
and a pair of eagle feathers.

Project Trademark "Brand"
The West Yellowstone Economic Development Board
developed a trademark logo for this ambitious
art project and asked that all artists paint
this logo on the left hip of their bison model.
Artists were free to choose a sharply contrasting
color scheme, or muted to more closely blend with their individual design.

Final Clearcoating
This is the final bison model, finished with Adhesion Promoter and four coats of Dupont Chroma system automotive Clear with UV Protectant. This will seal and protect the painting and prepare the model for outdoor display in and around West Yellowstone. The work is being provided courtesy of Bob's Body Shop, located in Glendive, Montana.
